Groups for Next-of-Kin
Cancer doesn’t only strike individuals, but also their family and loved ones. Therefore the Cancer Society has taken steps to form self-help groups for patients’ relatives. Life-threatening illnesses always carry with them changes in family life, and these changes may hit the children hard. They often feel lonely with their thoughts and fears. So the Society invites children and adolescents whose parents are ill to consult a psychologist in surroundings where they may also meet others in the same situation, and there to put words to their feelings without having to pay attention to others than themselves. The spouses of cancer patients and people who have lost their spouses to cancer also have the opportunity to join a self-help group. It is important for relations to get support, for there will be many new practical and emotional issues to tackle. In the self-help groups you may meet others in your situation, and there it is possible to put words to your thoughts and get support to solve various problems.
